About the Puerto Rican European Film Festival One of the Island's main cinematic events
The Puerto Rico European Film Festival (PREFF)—known in Spanish as the Festival de Cine Europeo de Puerto Rico in Spanish—is undoubtedly one of the island’s main cinematic events. Since its beginnings as a university festival, PREFF has taken the lead in bringing the best of new European film to Puerto Rico while engaging its audience with guest talks, workshops, and special events. Moreover, its short-film competition fosters the development of local filmmakers. Its youth film festival inspires and educates young students. Finally, its film tour shares the power of cinema with communities all around Puerto Rico.
MAKING FILM HISTORY IN PUERTO RICO
2007 – Before the festival officially began, Alliance Française Puerto Rico presented a French film festival in the island’s universities.
2010 – The Festival made its official debut as Festival de Cine Europeo at Caribbean Cinemas’ Metro Cinemas in Santurce.
2011 – The Festival moved its main screening venue to its current home, Caribbean Cinemas’ Fine Arts Miramar.
2018 – Despite the multiple challenges following Hurricane Maria’s passage in fall 2017, the Festival persevered and returned for its 9th edition.
2019 – The Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in style with two weeks of pre-Festival retrospectives and chats, an opening night reception at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and a full week of cinema at Fine Arts Miramar.
